A spokesperson for Tajui Entertainment, the agency managing his career, announced the tragic news, stating, "We have lost artist Hui Sung. He was found unconscious in his apartment due to a heart attack and was later pronounced dead." The spokesperson added that his colleagues and agency staff are in deep mourning.
Hui Sung was discovered unresponsive after his mother tried to contact him, following failed attempts by his manager to reach him. When she went to check on him, she found he wasn't responding, and paramedics later confirmed his death.
Hui Sung, who first entered the music scene in 2002, gained widespread fame for his emotional songs and distinctive performances. Some of his most famous songs include "With Me" and his cover of "Insomnia" by Craig David. He played a significant role in the rise of R&B music in South Korea during the early 2000s.
According to music critic Lee Dae-Hwa, Hui Sung was instrumental in the development of R&B music in South Korea, while critic Im Hee-Yoon praised him not only for his vocal talent but also for his abilities as a songwriter and composer.
However, his career faced a setback in 2021 when he was convicted of using propofol, which led to a one-year prison sentence with a two-year probation period.
Hui Sung was scheduled to perform in a music show with singer KCM in Daegu last Saturday.
