AMMAN — Green Wheelz is a “non-profit organization dedicated to environmental protection and helping children with disabilities,” said Raeda Sabha, its founder and manager. The initiative began serving the local community by recycling plastic bottle caps and aluminum drinks cans, and now contributes to the education and treatment of children with disabilities and cerebral palsy.

Sabha said that Green Wheelz started its trial launch at the end of 2013, to test the process. In 2014, the idea became more systematic and organized. The “Green” part of the name is self-explanatory, “Wheelz,” on the other hand “reflect more than one thing, it refers to recycling, wheelchairs, the Earth, and the circle of life,” Sabha said.

The Green Wheelz initiative has two goals: the first, is to raise environmental awareness and take concrete steps to protect the environment; the second, is to help less fortunate children with disabilities, particularly those with cerebral palsy.
She said that one of the initiative’s most important goals is to raise awareness and develop a culture of environmental protection, as well as raise awareness of the importance of volunteering among the youth, which will reflect positively on the local community.
“The challenges of volunteer work are great. There is no commitment to certain working hours due to volunteers’ concerns with their own lives, whether they are students or in employment,” Sabha said.
She said that the Green Wheelz team is striving to sow the seeds of volunteerism in the community, with the goal of changing the culture, which may then be developed or expanded in the future.
The initiative strives, in addition to protecting the environment, raising awareness and assisting children with disabilities, to change society and help the local economy.

In addition to donating to the education of children with disabilities, Green Wheelz provides them with wheelchairs, contributes to educating society about disabilities and raising awareness of these children’s needs within the community, as well as supports in-need local communities.
The initiative recycles for the benefit of children with disabilities, protecting the environment from waste, and reducing the burden on landfills.
Green Wheelz works on involving all members of society of all ages, nationalities, and social levels without any discrimination, to take an active role in supporting the environment. Sabha said that volunteers collect plastic bottle caps and then deliver them to recycling factories.
“Every human can be a part of the initiative, which targets all members of society,” she said.

Sabha said that volunteers sort plastic bottle caps and aluminum drinks cans, then they sell what they have collected to recycling facilities at the end of each year. “The sums, which are collected from the sale of plastic bottle caps and aluminum drink cans, are used to support children with disabilities especially those with cerebral palsy.” she said.
The initiative has also achieved a number of milestones, the most notable of which is the publication and distribution of a series of illustrated children’s stories in Arabic aimed at raising awareness on environmental and socioeconomic issues.
In 2019, Green Wheelz launched its first and largest awareness campaign dubbed, “Keeping our City Clean,” to educate public school kids in the fifth and sixth grades. The campaign covered 20 public schools, and aimed to raise awareness about waste and develop children’s sense of responsibility.
Sabha said that the first Arabic booklet that taught kids to be responsible with their waste, was published in Jordan during the awareness campaign. The campaign was supported by international funding.
Green Wheelz has faced different challenges, most significant of all was the financial challenge and the lack of any help or support from the authorities. On top of all that came the COVID-19 pandemic that paused the initiative’s activities.
“The Green Wheelz initiative’s goals are environmental, humanitarian, and cultural, and one of the most essential things that must continue is raising community awareness and culture,” Sabha concluded.
