The man, from Memphis, Tennessee, was sleeping next to his partner when the shot was fired early Monday morning. Fortunately, his injury was limited to a wound on his left thigh, which was treated at the hospital.
According to the police report, the dog, named "Oreo" — a one-year-old pit bull — "got its paw stuck in the trigger guard and ended up pressing the trigger."
The report did not specify the type of weapon used, and the incident was recorded as an "accidental injury."
While gun violence is widespread in the United States, cases of animals accidentally shooting humans are rare.
Two years ago, a German Shepherd dog shot and killed a 30-year-old man in Kansas after stepping on a hunting rifle.
In 2018, a 51-year-old man from Iowa was injured by a bullet from his mixed breed dog, which was a combination of pit bull and Labrador.
Local news station "Fox 13 Memphis" reported that the victim's girlfriend, whose name was not disclosed, said she was asleep when the shot went off.
She was quoted saying, "The dog is a playful animal and loves to jump and do things like that, and then the shot went off suddenly."
She added that she had learned from the incident the importance of "keeping the safety on the gun or using a trigger lock."
