The match ended 1-1 after regular time. Fulham took the lead with a goal from Nigerian defender Calvin Bassey in the 45+1 minute. Bruno Fernandes of Manchester United equalized in the 71st minute.
The teams went into extra time, but no goals were scored as both teams played cautiously. The match was then decided by a penalty shootout, which Fulham won 4-3 after Swedish defender Victor Lindelof and Dutch forward Joshua Zirkzee missed their penalties for United.
With this result, Manchester United's disastrous season continues as they have now been eliminated from all domestic cup competitions. Their only remaining hope for silverware is the Europa League, where they will face Spanish side Real Sociedad in the Round of 16.
Manchester United joins other big clubs that have exited the tournament, including Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham, and Newcastle, which lost 2-1 to Brighton after extra time. The only remaining major team in the competition is Manchester City, the runners-up from last season.
