With biking tours all over Amman, this club provides entertaining,
alternative ways for staying
healthy, meeting new people, and exploring the
city.
In an interview with
Jordan News, Mahmoud Ayoub, the
founder of Amman Cycling Club, delved into the founding story of his
organization.
As a university student, he dreamed of opening his own business.
In 2011, with the little capital he accumulated over the years, he bought five
bikes and opened a rental shop as a small startup.
From there, he saw potential
for growth and expanded the organization to what it is today.
With roughly 56,000 followers on Facebook and 50 to 100
people attending each event, Ayoub’s cycling project is not just a fad
— Ayoub attributes this growth largely to his fair pricing.

With just the
clothes on your back and 5-7 JDs, you are provided with a bike, water, and
snacks, as well as safety equipment, including a helmet and florescent vest.
Each touring event around Amman is accompanied by a coach, a medical expert to
provide first aid, and vehicles, including pickup trucks and motorcycles to
ensure the safety of the cyclists from traffic hazards.
Ayoub stressed how important safety is to his organization.
Amman Cycling Club also offers a wide variety of services
including bike rentals, repairs, and maintenance, training and safety events,
and touring events.
The touring events are held several days a week, typically
starting at 7pm during the weekdays and 9am on the weekends.

The events explore
areas around Amman such as Khalda, Dair Ghbar, and Dabouq.
They also provide
local events for children in neighborhoods, schools, and parks.
In these
events, they teach safety and traffic hazards as well as an obstacle course to
help practice balancing and maneuvering with the assistance of coaches.
Cycling has a great deal of benefits associated with it, according
to Ayoub.
He has personally noticed that cycling helps develop “legs of steel”
as well as improve your cardio.

He noted how refreshing it is to bike in the
early hours of the morning or late hours in the evening, describing the cool
breeze on your face as the feeling of stress just melt away.
And there is evidence to support these claims.
A meta-review published in 2011 was centered on the health
benefits associated with cycling.
The study discovered that there is strong evidence
for heart and lung health improvements as well as moderate evidence for reduced
cardiovascular risk factors in adults who cycle.
More specifically, evidence
has shown that cycling 3.5 hours a week or more is associated with reducing the
risk of developing cardiovascular diseases by up to 20 percent.
Another study published in 2009 found physical activity from
exercise helped improve symptoms in people suffering from
depression.
Cycling
has also been found to improve other areas of life including cognitive
function, emotional well-being, as well as social well-being.
