Dr. Natalia Zolotaryova, a cardiologist, points out that sleep is not just about rest—it’s a complex science. A person’s sleeping position can impact digestion, breathing, and even the condition of the skin.

According to her, sleeping on the side, especially the left side, is beneficial for digestion because the stomach is located on the left. Gravity helps food move naturally, reducing the risk of heartburn and acid reflux. However, sleeping on the right side may worsen these issues.
She explains:
“Still, there are drawbacks to this position. Pressure on the shoulder or hip can sometimes cause numbness, and the face rubbing against the pillow may lead to the formation of ‘sleep wrinkles’—creases that become permanent over time. That’s why it’s better to sleep on a medium-firm pillow and use silk pillowcases to reduce friction.”
Sleeping on the back, she adds, is ideal for spinal and skin health. In this neutral position, stress on the neck and lower back is minimized, and the face doesn’t touch the pillow, which helps prevent wrinkles.
However, she notes that back sleeping can cause snoring and obstructive sleep apnea, as the tongue may block the airway. She recommends elevating the head of the bed or sleeping on your side to prevent this.
Dr. Zolotaryova describes sleeping on the stomach as the worst position. Turning the head to the side places strain on the neck, which can lead to pain. The rib cage is compressed, making deep breathing difficult, and the pressure on the stomach can cause discomfort.
She explains:
“This position is also bad for the skin, as the face is pressed against the pillow all night, which can promote wrinkles, puffiness, and even rashes. If it’s difficult to stop sleeping this way, it’s better to use a thin pillow—or none at all—to reduce neck strain.”
