A new study conducted by researchers at the University of South Australia has investigated the effects of cold water immersion on health and well-being, revealing intriguing findings.
اضافة اعلانIn the largest scientific review of its kind, researchers analyzed data from 11 studies involving 3,177 participants. The results indicate that cold water immersion can provide short-term health benefits.
The study found that cold water immersion can reduce stress levels, but the effect lasts only up to 12 hours after exposure.
Participants who took cold showers for 20, 60, or 90 seconds reported a slight improvement in quality of life, but these benefits faded after three months.
Some findings indicated improvements in sleep quality, but the data were limited to male participants, making it difficult to generalize the results. The study also found no strong scientific evidence supporting common beliefs that cold water immersion boosts immunity or enhances mood.
Despite potential benefits, the study suggests that cold water immersion causes a temporary increase in inflammation.
According to co-researcher Dr. Ben Singh, this inflammation is a natural response of the body to cold exposure. While it may aid in adaptation and recovery, as seen in athletes after exercise, it could pose risks for individuals with chronic health conditions.
Cold water immersion typically involves exposing the body to cold water at temperatures between 10 to 15°C, with an exposure time of at least 30 seconds. Methods include cold showers, ice baths, and full-body immersion.
Researcher Tara Kinne from the University of South Australia emphasizes that while cold water immersion can offer short-term benefits, these effects diminish over time. She adds, "It is important to understand how this practice impacts our bodies, whether we are professional athletes or individuals seeking better well-being. There is an urgent need for long-term studies to examine the extended effects of cold water immersion."
