An international team of researchers, led by Russian-American biologist Antchi Baranova from George Mason University, studied the relationship between depression and the likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes.

The scientists used modern genetic methods, including genetic association analysis, multi-factorial genetic interaction, phenotype convergence analysis, and other techniques. It was found that type 2 diabetes has positive genetic associations not only with depression but also with emotional disorders.

The study results revealed that people with a genetic predisposition to depression were about 25% more likely to develop type 2 diabetes. However, those with a genetic predisposition to mood-related emotional disorders were nearly 50% more likely (48%) to develop the disease.

On the other hand, no reverse relationship was found, meaning that a genetic predisposition to type 2 diabetes did not practically affect the likelihood of developing depression.

The scientists pointed out that inflammatory processes in the human body play an important role in the development of type 2 diabetes. Chronic inflammation caused by excessive immune activity leads to metabolic disorders, which ultimately result in type 2 diabetes. This has identified a causal relationship between depressive traits and the likelihood of developing depression-related conditions.

Researchers hope that the data obtained will contribute to the development of new methods for treating inflammation in the human body. The scientists also emphasized the need for further testing on individuals from non-European backgrounds to validate the study's findings.
