Researchers developed a wearable flexible sensor system to monitor sleeping positions and the frequency of tossing and turning.

The device consists of a flexible angle sensor and a 6-axis motion sensor, and it was tested on 13 healthy participants (7 males and 6 females) over the course of 15 nights. The participants wore the device along with a wristwatch sleep monitor and completed surveys to evaluate the quality of their sleep, ensuring they did not suffer from sleep disorders.

The results showed that preferred sleeping position and frequency of turning significantly impacted sleep quality. Those who slept on their right side experienced fewer wake-ups, leading to better sleep quality. The study also confirmed that those who moved less during sleep had better rest.

Experts noted that sleeping on the left side could be the best option for specific health conditions, such as pregnancy or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), as it helps improve blood flow to the heart, fetus, uterus, and kidneys while reducing pressure on the liver.

Additionally, they emphasized that sleeping on the back increases the likelihood of snoring due to the tongue falling backward and blocking the airway. In contrast, sleeping on one of the sides helps keep the airways open, reducing the chances of snoring and sleep apnea.

The study highlighted the vital role of sleep in improving overall health, as good sleep is linked to a lower risk of cardiovascular diseases, stroke, and chronic atherosclerosis. Chronic sleep deprivation increases the likelihood of obesity and poor glucose regulation, negatively affecting cognition and decision-making.
