The widely-used portable power source, known as a Power Bank, which can be purchased for just a few dollars, has come under scrutiny in recent months following incidents involving fires caused by these devices.
In January, a fire destroyed a Busan Air plane on the runway, prompting several airlines to ban the use of portable chargers on board.
Some airlines have insisted that passengers keep power banks with them, rather than stowing them in overhead compartments.
Then, in March, 650 passengers had to evacuate a train at Raffles Place metro station after a woman’s power bank caught fire inside a train cabin.
Cause of Ignition
Power banks are more likely to short-circuit or catch fire if they have internal defects, are swollen, or are exposed to temperature changes or pressure.
These devices can ignite even when not in use—a defective or old power bank may malfunction, creating internal heat buildup that leads to fire.
Swollen batteries may explode, releasing flammable gases. If a power bank is stored in a bag or pocket alongside metal objects like keys, coins, or charging cables, a short circuit can occur at the exposed USB ports—leading to a fire as well.
Safety Tips
To protect yourself from power bank hazards:
Avoid using structurally damaged power banks, especially if they’ve been dropped or struck by hard or heavy objects.
Use power banks in cool or well-ventilated areas to prevent overheating.
Do not keep a power bank in a bag while charging your device, as the bag may block ventilation and cause the unit to overheat.
Once charging is complete, unplug the power bank to avoid overcharging.
Don’t let the battery fully drain; it’s best to recharge when the level drops to 20–30%.
Be cautious with fast charging, as it generates more heat—which could increase the risk of fire if the power bank cannot efficiently dissipate it.
By following these simple safety practices, users can extend the life of their power banks and significantly reduce the risk of fire or explosion.
