According to Sky News Arabia, the
Palestinian Center for Human Rights states that over 600,000 Palestinians were
arrested by Israeli authorities from the 1967 war to the first Palestinian
uprising in 1988, and Rory McCarthy estimates that one-fifth of the population
has been imprisoned since 1967.
Between 2000-2009, Israel arrested 6,700
Palestinians aged 12 to 18. Since October last year, more than 3,160
Palestinians, including former prisoners, have been arrested, bringing the
total in Israeli prisons to over 8,000, including 200 children and 78 female
prisoners.
Five Palestinian prisoners have died in
Israeli prisons since the war on Gaza. Notable Israeli prisons include Jalboua,
known for high-security and holding those accused of operations against Israel,
Ofer, established during the British mandate, and Nafha, located in the Negev
desert, housing over 1,000 prisoners and considered one of the harshest.
