The Libyan Public Prosecutor’s Office announced on Sunday that 28 bodies, believed to be of irregular migrants, were discovered buried near a detention center north of the city of Kufra in southeastern Libya.

According to a statement from the Libyan Public Prosecutor’s Office, the bodies were found north of Kufra, and 76 migrants were freed from forced detention.

The statement confirmed that the prosecutor’s office had consulted forensic experts to determine the cause of death and began documenting testimonies from the detained victims. Additionally, three individuals—two foreigners and one Libyan—were scheduled for interrogation by the investigative authorities.

Earlier, the Libyan Public Prosecutor's Office had announced the initiation of a criminal case against the head of the Coast Guard branch in Zuwara city, with four members of the Coast Guard arrested for allegedly planning to transport illegal migrants across the Mediterranean Sea.

According to a statement by the Libyan Public Prosecutor’s Office, the investigations revealed that some members of the Coast Guard planned to smuggle 37 irregular migrants across the Mediterranean, firing shots at members of the Criminal Investigations Department who tried to thwart the plan.

After the questioning of the four suspects, the investigator issued a decision to hold them in custody pending further investigation, with instructions to apprehend other security and military personnel involved in the operation. Additionally, the migrants were to be transferred to shelter centers until their situations were addressed, as per the Public Prosecutor’s Office statement.

Earlier, the Libyan Ministry of the Interior announced that it had arrested dozens of Egyptian irregular migrants and handed them over to authorities in Egypt.

This operation was part of the ministry’s efforts to enhance security and combat irregular migration.

The ministry added, "Security patrols from the Joint Security Room in the Western Mountains managed to apprehend several irregular migrants, in addition to stolen vehicles."

Previously, Libyan authorities had arrested dozens of Egyptians attempting to migrate illegally to Europe.

It’s worth noting that Egypt has established laws to penalize those involved in illegal migration activities or facilitating them, in addition to tightening security measures along the Egyptian borders and coastlines to prevent their use for such purposes.
