This statement came during a meeting chaired by MP Dina Al-Bashir with Maria Stavropoulou, Ambassador of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The meeting was attended by MPs Rakeen Abu Hanieh, Ibrahim Al-Tarawneh, Wasfi Haddad, Mohammad Al-Jarrah, Mohammad Aqel, Noor Abu Ghosh, and Abdul Nasser Al-Khasawneh.

Al-Bashir praised the UNHCR's efforts in supporting refugees and host communities, emphasizing that Jordan faces significant challenges that require continuous international support to sustain its humanitarian role toward Syrian refugees.

Committee members outlined the burdens Jordan has shouldered in hosting refugees, stressing the importance of facilitating their voluntary return in a manner that ensures stability and a dignified life in their homeland.

They also highlighted the need for ongoing coordination between the Jordanian government and UNHCR to ensure the best possible services for refugees.

For her part, Stavropoulou commended Jordan’s exceptional role in hosting Syrian refugees, noting that the country accommodates approximately 650,000 registered refugees with UNHCR, 90% of whom are Syrians, while the rest come from various nationalities.

She also praised His Majesty King Abdullah II’s efforts in this field, describing his role as a global model for humanitarian work.

Stavropoulou further pointed out the challenges UNHCR faces, particularly declining humanitarian funding. She called on the international community to support Jordan in continuing to provide essential services to refugees, especially in education and healthcare.
