CANBERRA —Australian Foreign
Minister Penny Wong declared on Friday that Australia would recommence funding
UNRWA after an approximately two-month suspension. This decision follows
similar moves by several other countries, including Australia, which had halted
financial support in response to unverified Israeli accusations regarding the
involvement of UNRWA staff in the Operation Al-Aqsa Flood.

Wong clarified that Australia
had consulted with UNRWA and other donor nations and expressed satisfaction
with the additional assurances provided. An immediate allocation of
approximately AUD 6 million (equivalent to USD 3.9 million) will be made
available in funding, Al-Mamlaka TV reported.
Addressing reporters during a
press conference, Wong emphasized the urgent humanitarian needs of Palestinian
refugees, stating, "There are children and families starving, and we have
the ability, along with the international community, to assist them. We
recognize that UNRWA is central and essential in providing that aid."
Meanwhile, the UN has
initiated an investigation into the allegations leveled against UNRWA, and the
agency has terminated the contracts of certain employees based on information
provided by Israel.
Sweden, Canada, and the EU
have partially resumed their funding commitments to UNRWA in a separate
development. Last week, the UNRWA Commissioner-General expressed cautious
optimism regarding the potential for other donor entities to follow suit in
resuming their financial support.
