CAIRO — Two
Egyptian security sources stated that Cairo has sent about 40 tanks and armored
personnel carriers to northeastern Sinai over the past two weeks as Israeli
media reported that the
Israeli Occupation Forces (
IOF) approved a military
operation in Rafah, Al-Ghad reported.

Since the beginning of Israel's war on the
strip, Egypt has constructed a concrete border wall with foundations reaching
six meters deep and topped with barbed wire. The two Egyptian security sources
also mentioned that Egypt has set up sand barriers and increased surveillance
at border deployment sites.
However, forces are being deployed as Israel
expands its
military operations to include Rafah, where most of Gaza's
population seeks refuge, intensifying Egypt's concerns about potential mass
displacement.
The Israeli newspaper, Yedioth Ahronoth
reported that the IOF approved a military operation in Rafah. It noted that
preparations for the operation began weeks ago, and the IOF has already
approved a plan that includes the necessity of evacuating the displaced.
Meanwhile, the official Israeli Broadcasting
public Corporation (IBPC) stated that the
military operation in Rafah would
commence after the completion of an ‘extensive evacuation’ of civilians from
the city and its outskirts.
Notably, Israeli warplanes bombed Rafah on
Friday, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the IOF to prepare for
the evacuation of displaced civilians.
Satellite images captured in December 2023 and
January revealed new constructions along the 13-kilometer border near Rafah,
extending the wall to the sea's edge on the northern border side.
