BRUSSELS – The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said on Wednesday that she supports imposing sanctions on Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank. اضافة اعلان

According to Al-Mamlaka TV, Von der Leyen denounced the escalating violence committed by settlers, considering it a threat to the region's stability. She stated, "The escalating violence by extremists among the settlers is causing immense suffering for the Palestinians. It jeopardizes the prospects for lasting peace and could exacerbate regional instability. That is why I support imposing sanctions on individuals involved in attacks in the West Bank."

These statements from von der Leyen come after the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, announced on Monday that he would propose imposing sanctions on extremists among West Bank settlers. Such measures would require consensus among the 27 EU member states, and there are internal divisions within the bloc. However, Borrell stated that there was "no consensus" so far.

The EU's move follows the announcement last week by the United States that it would deny visas to settlers behind a wave of violence in the West Bank.
