This followed a phone call between President Higgins and the
Executive Director of the
World Health Organization (WHO) Emergencies Program,
Dr. Mike Ryan, on Friday. During the call, the president received a detailed
update on the situation in Gaza, with the recorded death toll in the strip
surpassing 27,000.
President Higgins expressed a sense of urgency, citing media
reports of a planned attack on the increasingly crowded Rafah. He warned that
any expansion of Israel’s bombing campaign into densely populated areas, where
many have sought refuge, 'would leave any respect for humanitarian law in
tatters.'
"The suggestion that such a development take place and
be watched in near silence removes all morality from any stated position of
public concern for the most basic of human rights," he said.
Furthermore, the president highlighted concerns from
WHO and
UNICEF regarding the humanitarian crisis, including displacement, health system
deterioration, food insecurity, and disease outbreaks. He stressed the
importance of supporting the 30,000
UNRWA staff in the region, including 13,000
in the strip.
"Those countries who have removed their funding from
UNRWA must be reminded of the unavoidable consequences their actions are likely
to have on this most vulnerable. This is not a matter on which anyone who
believes in the vital need for a humanitarian response can remain silent."
President Higgins reiterated his call for an
immediate ceasefire, emphasizing the critical need to resume serious discussions for a
meaningful, long-term settlement that ensures peace and security. He further
advocated for the recognition of a Palestinian State as part of this process.
