Israel's ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdan, has called on Guterres to retract his condemnation of Israel following
the excessive use of force by the
Israeli occupation forces in the Jenin
refugee camp, according to Al-Ghad News.
During the daily press conference in New
York, Haq addressed journalists' questions about retracting the condemnation of
Israel, stating that
Guterres "clearly condemns all violence affecting
civilians in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories, regardless of the
perpetrator".
Expressing his anger over the impact of
Israeli airstrikes and the
attack on the Jenin refugee camp, Guterres stated
that the operation had resulted in over 100 injuries among civilians, displaced
thousands of residents, caused damage to schools and hospitals, and disrupted water
and electricity networks.
Furthermore,
Guterres criticized Israel for obstructing the injured from receiving medical care and preventing
humanitarian workers from reaching those in need.
The two-day Israeli attack, aimed at
suppressing
Palestinian activists, led to the martyrdom of at least 12
Palestinians. It also resulted in the destruction of roads and narrow alleyways
in the Jenin camp, forcing thousands of people to flee their homes.
Addressing journalists, Guterres
emphasized, "I strongly condemn all acts of
violence against civilians,
including acts of terrorism."
When questioned if this condemnation
applies to Israel, he responded, "It applies to any excessive use of
force, and it is evident that in this case, excessive force was used by the
Israeli forces."
At the request of the UAE, the
UN Security Council discussed the Israeli military operation in Jenin behind
closed doors on Friday. Assistant secretary-general Khaled Al-Khiary briefed
the council members on the situation.
