According to the Israeli Broadcasting
Corporation reported by Khaberni, the head of the department, Israel Afisher,
announced his resignation on Monday due to "actions" by
Itamar Ben Gvir, the leader of the extremist right-wing "Jewish Power" party and
the distribution of weapons to settlers without standards.
Last week, Afisher admitted in a Knesset
hearing that individuals without certificates had been appointed to issue
weapon permits to citizens. The government's legal advisor, Gali Bacher Meyara,
is investigating whether weapons licenses were issued without authority.
Ben Gvir launched a policy two months ago to
distribute weapons to civilians in Israel and also to settlers in the West
Bank, claiming it would prevent Palestinian attacks. Ben Gvir pointed out the
distribution of thousands of weapons in different areas of Israel and to
settlers in the West Bank, but his policies faced criticism from both Israeli
and international circles.
In response, Ben Gvir attacked Afisher in a
statement obtained by Anadolu, criticizing his decision to resign. He stated,
"My policy regarding the distribution of weapons to Israeli citizens who
meet clear and ongoing standards will continue." He considered that those
who do not continue to implement the policy and are subjected to pressure from
attacks by the left in such committees and others cannot actually continue as
the head of the Firearms Department when Israel is in a state of war. Ben Gvir
reiterated that "the largest possible number of citizens who meet the
standards must be armed," without specifying the nature of these
standards.
