AMMAN — Hebrew daily newspaper, Maariv, has published a report warning of the potential consequences of Israel's actions against Palestinians in the West Bank and Jerusalem. In a report entitled "A storm approaching," the newspaper said Israeli security agencies' predictions are consistent with the warning of US Central Intelligence Agency Chief Bill Burns about the possibility of a third Intifada as the region approaches a dramatic security escalation in the West Bank.اضافة اعلان

Maariv reported that despite attempts by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant to calm the region, there are fears of a violent escalation in the coming months, particularly during the month of Ramadan. Washington's stance on the matter, it adds, is that it holds no tolerance for unilateral Israeli actions, such as settlement construction in occupied territories.

‘Reaching a brink’According to Maariv, Burns' warning serves as a sharp message to the Israeli government, signaling that they are approaching the brink of a violent confrontation that would be difficult to reverse.

The delay in the evacuation of Al-Khan Al-Ahmar, the halt of Itamar Ben-Gvir's plans to demolish a Palestinian home in Silwan, and the agreement between the Prison Service and the leaders of Palestinian captives are all indications of Israel's understanding of the US's stance, which calls for a pragmatic and moderate approach, similar to the policy pursued by the previous government.

The paper added that it is difficult for Netanyahu to abide by the statement made by extremist Finance Minister Smotrich about the government's commitment to settlements, given the American pressure to avoid such unilateral steps.

Possible escalationsMaariv highlighted four factors that could potentially escalate the security situation: an increase in the number of Palestinian casualties, conflicts in Area C, the prisoners' cause, and tensions in Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa mosque.

The report noted that since the beginning of 2023, the number of Palestinian casualties has almost doubled, averaging one martyr every day, indicating the continuation of Israeli military operations in Palestinian areas.
