THE HAGUE – On
Wednesday, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) announced that it will rule
on Friday whether or not it will grant emergency measures against Israel
following accusations by South Africa that the Israel war on Gaza is a
state-led genocide, according to Israeli and South African sources.

The UN’s top court
issued a statement saying the 17-judge panel will hand down its ruling in court
on January 26 at 12:00 p.m. GMT, or 3:00 p.m. Amman time.
South Africa had
anticipated such an event on Wednesday evening, as News24, a South African news
outlet, quoted two informed sources who said that South Africa expects the
International Court of Justice (ICJ) to issue a decision on Friday.
Additionally, News24
reported that a government delegation from South Africa arrived in The Hague
expecting the ruling.
In the preliminary
ruling, the ICJ will not address the central issue of whether Israel is
committing genocide but will instead assess the prospect of taking immediate
action until the court evaluates the case in its entirety, which often takes
years.
Earlier this month,
South Africa asked the ICJ to issue an order to stop the Israeli aggression on
the besieged sector, accusing Israel of committing genocide.
Israel disputed the
claims of genocide, calling them "grossly distorted" and asserting
that "it has the right to defend itself."
Israel said that
South Africa was acting as an emissary of the Hamas group. It said the Israeli
Occupation Forces (IOF) is targeting "Hamas terrorists," not
Palestinian civilians, but that civilian casualties in wars are unavoidable.
Since October 7,
2023, Israel has killed over 25,000 Palestinians and displaced more than 2
million people.
