TEL AVIV- On Sunday, Israeli newspaper Maariv revealed that
the
Israeli Occupation Forces (
IOF) seized 200 million shekels ($54.4 million)
from the Palestinian Authority’s (PA) funds stored in the Bank of Palestine’s
(BoP) vaults in Gaza City.

To add insult to injury, the IOF acknowledged the seizure
of the PA’s funds. The spokesperson for the IOF stated, “Last week, the forces
carried out an operation at the BoP in Gaza City to prevent Hamas from taking
control of the funds. This activity was executed in accordance with political
directives and is subject to those directives,” Arabic Post reported.
On January 7, the Gaza government’s media office reported
that the IOF had stolen money and gold jewelry from the Gaza Strip, estimated
to be worth around $25 million, since
October 7, 2023.
The thefts occurred through various means, including
checkpoints such as Salah Al-Din Street. They targeted those who had fled from
northern Gaza to the south, stealing their bags containing valuable possessions
like money, gold, and jewelry.
The second method, according to the government office,
involved “raiding homes from which residents were asked to evacuate.” The IOF
took souvenir photos and video clips documenting the thefts, which some of them
shared on their social media accounts. This incident occurred in the town of
Beit Lahia, in northern Gaza.
On December 30, 2023, the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights
Monitor confirmed that the IOF was allowing its soldiers in Gaza to engage in
“unethical practices” against Palestinian civilians during home raids. These
practices included stealing possessions and looting.
The Euro-Med Monitor documented a series of cases revealing
the involvement of IOF in systematic theft of Palestinian property, including
gold, cash, mobile phones, and laptops. The estimated value of the stolen items
amounts to tens of millions of dollars.
