AMMAN – In 1977, the
United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) designated November 29 as the International Day of
Solidarity with the Palestinian people. However, this year, the significance of
this international day reverberates on a global scale, given Israel’s war on
Gaza. Over the course of 55 days, the world has borne witness to tens of
thousands of casualties, with the most affected being children, women, and the
elderly, all set against the backdrop of the persistent occupation. Here is the significance of this
year's International Day, featuring insights from Jordanian experts.

Long before October 7, His Majesty
King Abdullah issued longstanding warnings on the international stage,
emphasizing the dire consequences of injustice towards the Palestinians. He
highlighted the imminent risk of catastrophe in the absence of justice, sovereignty,
and the right to self-determination, as reported by Al-Mamlaka TV.
A
shift in global opinion
His Majesty dedicated relentless
efforts to halt Israel’s war on Gaza and facilitate the delivery of
humanitarian aid, propelling the Palestinian cause back into international
focus. This move prompted a shift in global opinion and spurred calls for an end
to the aggression.
Break
the silence
Abdullah Kanaan, the Secretary-General
of the Royal Committee for Jerusalem Affairs, asserted that this International
Day symbolizes global recognition of the historical injustice inflicted upon
Palestinians. It serves as a human awakening, urging the international
community to compel Israel's compliance with international resolutions. This
includes recognizing the right of the Palestinian people to an independent
state within the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. Kanaan
stressed the urgency of global solidarity as Israel wages a war on gaza. He
called on the world to break its silence, intervene swiftly to stop the war,
and prevent further loss of life and comprehensive destruction, highlighting
environmental risks and the spread of diseases.
A
history between Jordan and Palestine
Meanwhile, Dr. Khaled Al-Shnikat,
President of the Jordanian Society for Political Sciences, emphasized the deep
history and shared struggle between the Jordanian and Palestinian people. Their
common geography, political values, and shared beliefs reinforce a unique
relationship. During Israel’s war on Gaza, Jordan robustly supported the
resilience of the Palestinian people, diplomatically mobilizing global support
to halt aggression.
He demonstrated Jordan’s commitment
to stand with the Palestinians, providing immediate aid such as field hospitals
and medical assistance.
Break
the silence
Meanwhile, Rafiq Khirfan,
Director-General of the Palestinian Affairs Department, highlighted the
critical situation in Gaza, calling for swift international intervention to end
the war and prevent further losses. He commended Jordan's diplomatic efforts,
led by The King, in rallying support to stop the war and provide humanitarian
aid to Gaza.
Disappointment
with the international community’s passive approach
Former Deputy Hael Al-Daaja
expressed disappointment with the international community's passive approach to
the Palestinian cause. He urged practical international efforts, emphasizing
that mere speeches and statements do not suffice. Daaja underscored the failure
of the international community to ensure justice for Palestinians and protect
their rights, echoing King Abdullah II's questions about the credibility of
international justice and solidarity.
This year coincides with a seismic
shift in global perceptions of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The invasive
Israeli regime has committed heinous crimes against the Palestinian people,
thrusting the Palestinian cause back into the international spotlight.
Demonstrations, notably in the Americas and Europe, demand an end to
hostilities, recognition of Palestinian statehood, and the pursuit of a
political resolution.
