AMMAN — In New York, a donor conference was
concluded to support UNRWA. The conference was attended by numerous
international and diplomatic figures, including the secretary-general of the
UN, the president of the General Assembly, and the UNRWA commissioner-general,
in addition to several ambassadors of member states.
After the conference ended, the agency, which
is facing a significant funding shortage, announced in a press statement that
the international community has once again reaffirmed its long-term commitment
to Palestinian refugees and UNRWA by providing political and financial support.
According to a local media outlet, the
statement mentioned that "member states collectively pledged $812.3
million, including $107.2 million in new contributions".
However, UNRWA Commissioner-General, Philippe
Lazzarini, expressed gratitude for the announced pledges but highlighted that
they fall short of the funds needed for the agency to maintain over 700 schools
and 140 UNRWA clinics starting from September onwards.
Lazzarini emphasized that UNRWA will
persistently work with partners, including the host countries that are the
largest supporters of refugees, to raise the necessary funds.
In response to the pledged funds received
during the conference, UNRWA announced that the donations will be allocated to
address urgent appeals.
The breakdown of the funds is as follows:
- Program Budget: $53 million
- Emergency Appeal for the Occupied Palestinian
Territory: $32.2 million
- Emergency Appeal for the Syria Crisis: $12.9
million
- Urgent Appeal for the Syria Earthquake: $2.1
million
- Projects: $7 million.
