In a press
statement on Saturday morning, he stated, "The cities of
Al-Qaim and the Iraqi border areas are being targeted by airstrikes from US aircraft. These
strikes come at a time when Iraq is striving to ensure the stability of the
region,” as reported by Al-Mamlaka TV.
He added
that "these
strikes constitute a violation of Iraqi sovereignty, undermine
the efforts of the Iraqi government, and pose a threat that could lead Iraq and
the region into dire consequences, with severe implications for security and
stability in Iraq and the region."
The
US Central Command announced airstrikes in Iraq and Syria against the Quds Force
of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard and affiliated groups, targeting over 85
objectives.
The
statement clarified that the targeted facilities included command and control
centers, espionage sites, as well as missile and drone storage locations, using
more than 125 precision-guided munitions.
US President
Joe Biden stated on Friday that he had given orders for military strikes on
facilities in Iraq and Syria associated with factions that attacked US forces,
adding that the response would continue.
Biden
stated, "Our response began today and will continue at times and locations
we choose. The United States does not seek conflict in the Middle East or
anywhere else in the world. Let it be known to anyone who seeks to harm us that
we will respond."
Syrian
television reported casualties in a US attack on sites in the desert and the
Syrian-Iraqi border on Friday evening. Three US officials told Reuters that the
United States had begun retaliatory strikes in Iraq and Syria.
A
correspondent for Al-Mamlaka TV in Syria reported the presence of US aircraft
flying in the vicinity of the Syrian-Iraqi border, with aerial targeting
affecting a point in the town of Al-Hari in the city of Al-Bukamal. The
correspondent also noted the killing of several elements of the auxiliary
forces of the Syrian army in an attack by unidentified aircraft on points near
the Ain Ali shrine in the countryside of Deir al-Zor.
US media
reported on Friday evening that the US military had carried out airstrikes on
targets in Syria in response to the recent killing of three soldiers in an
attack on US forces at an "advanced site near the Syrian border."
Biden receives the remains
US President
Joe Biden attended the arrival ceremony of the remains of three American
soldiers killed in a drone attack believed to be of Iranian origin on Friday.
The three
reserve soldiers killed last Sunday were from Georgia: Sergeant William Jerome
Reeves (46 years old), Private First Class Kennedy Ladon Sanders (24 years
old), and Private Bryona Alexandria Mowitt (23 years old).
Biden joined
the families of the deceased at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware.
The drone
attack also injured more than 40 people, raising fears of a wider war in the
Middle East as a result of the Israeli war on Gaza.
On Tuesday,
Biden stated that he had made his decision on how to respond. Expectations
pointed to retaliatory strikes, but the timing of the response was not clear.
Four US
officials told Reuters that assessments indicate the drone used in the attack
is of Iranian origin.
