BAGHDAD
— On Friday, Iraqi Prime Minister Shia’ Al Sudani said in a statement that Iraq
has reopened the Al-Shamal refinery in Baiji after being closed for 10 years.
According to the statement, the refinery was shut down in 2014, when it was
captured by Daesh, who had gained control over significant parts of the
country. As an OPEC member, Iraq now has a refinery with a capacity of 150,000
barrels per day, Al-Mamlaka TV reported.
During
their occupation, Daesh (ISIS) established a stronghold in Baiji, which
resulted in numerous threats to refinery workers and the seizure of its output.
The group reportedly sold the refined products to neighboring countries and
used the proceeds to fund their activities.
