AMMAN — The Palestinian foreign ministry has condemned
Israel’s approval of the construction of over 1,000 new settlement units in the
occupied West Bank. The move is seen as a step towards deepening and expanding
Israeli colonies in the region, in violation of international agreements and
the principles of the two-state solution.

In a statement released on Monday, the Palestinian Foreign
Ministry criticized Israel for its disregard of international positions, signed
agreements, and resolutions of international legitimacy, which demand the
cessation of settlement activity.
The statement emphasized that settlements are illegal,
illegitimate, and a crime that threatens to undermine the two-state solution,
which seeks to establish a Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its
capital, in accordance with UN resolutions.
The ministry said the deepening and expansion of settlements
is “a blatant challenge to the will of the international community, and a
disregard for American and international positions that warn of the dangers of
the situation”.
It also said Israel of exploiting double international
standards to implement its expansionist colonial plans and to gradually annex
the West Bank.
Israel’s continued impunity
The ministry also argued that Israel's continued impunity
and lack of accountability for its crimes have encouraged it to commit more of
them, especially with regards to settlements.
