TEL AVIV — Israeli media reported that
Israel's government has approved a law to halt the broadcast of Al Jazeera and
shut down its offices in the occupied Palestinian territories, following a
morning phone poll among government members, Khaberni reported.
The
bill states, "If a foreign broadcasting entity is found to jeopardize the state's
security, the Minister of Communications, with approval from the Minister of
Defense and the Ministerial Committee on National Security Affairs, may order
the suspension of broadcasts and the closure of the channel's offices."
Recent months have seen escalating Israeli
calls to shut down Al Jazeera, but the government has hesitated, fearing
repercussions on efforts to release Israeli captives held in Gaza. Furthermore,
in November 2023, the broadcasting of the Lebanese Al-Mayadeen channel was
halted, and its operations were banned on charges of ‘harming Israel’s
security.’
Notably, after October 7, 2023, the Israeli
government passed temporary legislation allowing the Israeli Minister of
Communications Shlomo Karhi to prevent the broadcast of foreign media outlets
from Israel, citing concerns about Israeli security.
