Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh said in a
press statement on Tuesday that the maritime passage for delivering aid to Gaza
was one of the topics discussed by US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and his
Israeli counterpart, Yoav Gallant, in Washington Wednesday, Al-Ghad reported.
She added that efforts related to establishing
the temporary port are ongoing and mentioned that Israel will "play a
role" in securing the port and aid passage, but the details on this matter
are still under evaluation.
She noted that the US will distribute aid
through its partners and non-governmental organizations in the region,
indicating a lack of further information regarding the specifics of this stage.
She stated that since the beginning of March,
the US has airdropped over eight tonnes of "pork-free" food items to
Gaza through 17 aerial operations.
In his State of the Union address on March
8th, President Joe Biden announced that he had instructed the military to
establish a temporary port near Gaza's coast, stating that more humanitarian
aid would enter Gaza by sea through the port.
On the same day, Cypriot President Nicos
Anastasiades announced during a joint press conference with European Commission
President Ursula von der Leyen that progress was being made towards opening a
maritime passage for transporting humanitarian aid to Gaza.
