AMMAN – According to a recent report by the UN, the number of Israeli settlers residing illegally in the occupied Golan Heights has exceeded the native Syrian population. اضافة اعلان

The report, released last week, was prepared by the UN Special Committee tasked with investigating Israeli practices affecting the human rights of the Palestinian people and other Arabs in the occupied territories, commonly known as "The Special Committee".

The report expressed serious concern over this significant development, as it signifies the first time since Israel occupied the Golan Heights in 1967 that Jewish settlers have outnumbered the Syrian Arab population.

It emphasized that Israeli policies and practices in the region have resulted in the isolation of the population from their familial and cultural ties to Syria, compelling their integration into the Israeli economy and education system due to the absence of viable alternatives.

Disturbing developments
The release of the report coincides with the UN Committee's end-of-mission statement, which involved visits to Cairo and Amman and documented disturbing developments taking place in the Golan Heights.

Notably, it highlighted that the infamously violent Netzah Yehuda Battalion was deployed to the occupied Syrian Golan in January 2023 for an 11-month period, raising grave concerns about its potential human rights implications for the local population.

Furthermore, the report revealed that the Battalion had previously faced disciplinary measures for its involvement in the death of 78-year-old Palestinian-American Omar Abdalmajeed As'ad outside Ramallah in January 2022.
