The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) strongly condemned the raid of extremist minister Itamar Ben Gvir and hundreds of radical settlers on the Al-Aqsa Mosque, desecrating its courtyards under the protection of Israeli occupation forces. The OIC considered this an affront to the feelings of Muslims worldwide and a blatant violation of relevant United Nations resolutions.
In a statement issued late Wednesday via its official website, the OIC warned of the dangers of the continued Israeli occupation policies based on aggression, settlement, annexation, displacement, and attempts to impose Israel’s alleged sovereignty over the West Bank and its plans to alter the historical and legal status of Islamic sanctities, particularly the Al-Aqsa Mosque.
The organization reaffirmed that Israel, the occupying power, has no sovereignty over Palestinian land, including the occupied city of Jerusalem and its sanctities. It emphasized that the Al-Aqsa Mosque/Haram al-Sharif, in its entirety, is a place of worship exclusively for Muslims.
The OIC also condemned the escalating Israeli crimes against humanitarian, UN, medical, and journalistic teams in the Gaza Strip, the latest of which was the massacre committed against displaced people at an UNRWA clinic in the Jabalia camp in northern Gaza, which resulted in the martyrdom of 19 people, including 9 children, and dozens of injuries. Furthermore, it condemned the execution of several workers from the Palestinian Red Crescent, Civil Defense, and the United Nations in the city of Rafah, southern Gaza, several days ago. The OIC considered these actions an extension of war crimes that require accountability and prosecution under international criminal law.
The OIC renewed its call to the international community, especially the United Nations Security Council, to fulfill its responsibilities in obliging Israel, the occupying power, to end its continued violations of the sanctity of holy places, religious freedom, and force it to immediately and comprehensively halt genocidal crimes, forced displacement, and ethnic cleansing against the Palestinian people.
Earlier on Wednesday, Ben Gvir raided the Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied East Jerusalem under heavy protection, accompanied by more than 24 Israeli settlers. This was the fifth time Ben Gvir has raided the mosque since the start of the war on Gaza on October 7, 2023, and the eighth time since he assumed office as minister at the end of 2022.
Ben Gvir continues his raids on Al-Aqsa despite Arab, Islamic, and international criticism, with such raids occurring after approval from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
