GAZA — Health officials in Israel have warned
that Israeli soldiers injured in the aggression on Gaza are suffering from
drug-resistant germs, Jo24 reported. The Infectious Diseases Association (IDI)
in Israel stated that many drug-resistant disease causes were found, especially
in limb injuries, including highly resistant bacterial strains such as
Klebsiella and Escherichia coli, as well as Aspergillus fungi.

"Reports from all hospitals indicate that
soldiers returning from the battlefield are infected with drug-resistant
infections." The head of IDI Professor Galia Rahav said, adding "A
significant portion of the injuries diagnosed among wounded soldiers is also
occasionally found in Israel, but it is present in people who have been exposed
to these bacteria and not prior."
“Touching soil and mud in the area causes
exposure to these drug-resistant bacteria, as well as mold,” Rahay added.
The emergence of these infections affects the
treatment of soldiers, sometimes requiring surgical intervention such as
endoscopy to remove infected tissues, according to Yedioth Ahronot newspaper.
Since early November, the World Health
Organization (WHO) has warned of an increasing risk of disease outbreaks in
Gaza due to the collapse of healthcare services, and water and sanitation
systems.
Furthermore, hospitals in Gaza are under
intense attack, with only 11 out of 36 operating partially. At least 300
healthcare workers in Gaza have been killed since the start of the Israeli
aggression, surpassing the total number of healthcare workers killed in all
conflict-affected countries in any year since 2016, according to the Medical
Aid for Palestinians organization.
The Director-General of WHO Dr. Tedros Adhanom
Ghebreyesus wrote last month on X, formerly known as Twitter "Given the
living conditions and the lack of healthcare, more people could die from
diseases compared to explosions."
Reports surfaced, earlier this month, of an
outbreak of scabies among Israeli Occupation Forces in Gaza, with an increase
in cases of diarrhea and gastrointestinal diseases requiring evacuation for
medical treatment.
The cause of the outbreak is believed to be
the pathogenic Shigella factor, while inadequate sanitation and poor storage of
food donated by Israelis to their army since the start of the ground operation
have been suggested as sources of infection, according to The Telegraph.
This is not the first time drug-resistant
bacteria have emerged in conflict zones, where the dilapidated healthcare
infrastructure and unrestricted use of antibiotics push resistant bacteria
beyond the direct combat areas. An earlier example is Acinetobacter Baumannii,
(a notorious bacterium transmitted by wounded soldiers who served in Iraq and
Afghanistan to US hospitals) known as one of the deadliest drug-resistant
disease agents, it infects wounds, spreads through the bloodstream, can cause
sepsis, limb loss, and can be fatal.
