WASHINGTON – On Friday, the
US Department of State emphasized the importance
of allowing Palestinian civilians to return to their homes with dignity. This
statement comes amid the
Israeli Occupation Forces’ (IOF) readiness to launch a
military operation in Rafah, an area that hosts over a million displaced
individuals.

A spokesperson for the US Department of State expressed grave concern about
the potential
attack on Rafah and the severe humanitarian consequences that
could result from a military operation under the current circumstances,
Al-Mamlaka TV reported.
Furthermore, Washington stressed the immediate release of all Israeli
captives and asserted that their release should not be tied to other issues.
UN High Commissioner for Refugees,
Filippo Grandi, emphasized the need to
prevent the population in southern Gaza from fleeing to Egypt “at any cost,” as
such an action would be tantamount to a “death sentence” for the peace process.
According to the UN, Rafah has transformed into a massive camp. It is the
only major city in the Gaza Strip that the IOF has not yet invaded by land.
More than half of Gaza’s population is crammed into less than 20 percent of the
territory’s area.
