TEL AVIV – Shmuel Eliyahu, the Israeli rabbi
and father of
Heritage Minister Amihai Eliyahu, endorsed his son's statements
regarding the possibility of
dropping a nuclear bomb on the Gaza Strip,
describing it as a "feasible option," despite the regional and
international reactions provoked by his son's remarks.

Al-Ghad reported that in a weekly
Torah lecture on Monday, November 13, Eliyahu, the chief rabbi of the occupied city
of Safed, embraced his son's statements and challenged the
authorities in Tel Aviv to punish him for it. The rabbi, smiling during his remarks, said,
"There is now much debate about what should be done with Gaza... Should we
drop a nuclear bomb on them?" He added, "It's an option."
A video clip titled "How to Defeat the
Kingdom of Ishmael" was published on YouTube by the rabbi's office late on
Monday, using the name Ishmael mentioned in the holy book to refer to Arabs in
a derogatory manner.
Eliyahu, a prominent figure on the fringe of
the far-right nationalist movement in Israel, has faced criticism in recent
years for various statements and judgments related to Jewish law, including
those prohibiting the renting or selling of properties owned by Jews in the
Arab city of Safed.
