NEW
YORK — The Deputy Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs of the UN, Martin
Griffiths, has not ruled out the possibility that the number of casualties in
the
Gaza Strip is significantly higher than the currently reported figures.

In
an interview with the Financial Times, the UN official stated that the number
of fatalities under the rubble in the
Gaza Strip remains unknown.
According
to him, disease and hunger have emerged as the primary causes of death and
deprivation in Gaza, which is currently grappling with a humanitarian
catastrophe, Al-Ghad reported.
He
added “We have yet to see what is under the rubble. These estimates of [around
18,000] dead — once you start digging under the rubble, the statistics change
radically.”
Griffiths
pointed out that the number of casualties in the [February]
earthquake in Turkey doubled after the completion of the rubble removal operations.
As
previously reported, more than 19,000 people have been killed since October
7. The Palestinian Ministry of Health
confirms that 70 percent of the victims of Israeli airstrikes are women and
teenagers.
