Gilboa prison is considered to be one of Israel's most secure prisons. Four of the men who escaped were serving life sentences. Five out of six prisoners belong to the Islamic Jihad Movement, and the sixth belongs to the Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, according to The Hebrew newspaper Haaretz. The escape is believed to have been aided by outside forces through smuggled cellphones.

The prisoners who escaped are: Mahmoud Abdullah Ardah, Yacoub Qasem, Yacoub Mahmoud Qadri, Ayham Nayef  Kamamji, Zakariye Zubeidi, and Monadel Yacoub Nafeat.

The occupation prison service commander reported that the escape appeared through excavating a 10 meter tunnel in recent months with outside help. Al-Jazeera News shared that the tunnel was excavated from under the toilet in the prisoner's cells.

According to Haaretz, the attention of Israeli occupation security authorities is focused on attempting to relocate the prisoners out of the fear that they will try to carry out attacks or try to escape across the Jordanian border.
