THE HAGUE — On Thursday, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) adjourned its first session after hearing South Africa's case against Israel for committing genocide in Gaza.

In its closing remarks, South Africa's legal team asked the ICJ to adopt a provisional ruling consisting of the following:
- Refrain from carrying out any action that violates the Convention on the Prevention of Genocide, especially the killing of Palestinians.
- Refrain from any actions or decisions that include forced displacement, displacement, or denial of access to water and food.
- Stop killing Palestinians and inflicting any physical or psychological harm on them.
- Prevent the destruction of evidence and place no restrictions on fact-finding missions.
- Punish anyone who incites or calls for genocide in Gaza.
- Immediately suspend its military operations in Gaza.
- Avoid any actions that deprive Palestinians of access to water, food, and medicine.
- Impose temporary measures, including issuing an order for Israel to immediately suspend military operations in Gaza, pointing out that this issue is very important for the future of international law compared to any other issue. Adding that the role of the court is not limited to interpreting the Convention but also to prevent extermination by ensuring its implementation.
- The South African legal team stressed that the ICJ must act immediately to prevent genocide in the Gaza Strip.
