Alongside NASA astronaut Steve Bowen, Neyadi spent seven
hours outside the International Space Station (ISS), where they installed
cables and insulation on the station's "starboard truss" for the next
pair of ISS Roll out Solar Arrays (iROSAs).
Successful missionThe iROSAs are essential for the space station's power
needs, with four having already been installed and two more to be mounted on
the platforms installed by Neyadi and Bowen.
During the spacewalk, the duo also freed up an electronics
box that housed a communications antenna. The antenna will be removed during a
future spacewalk before being returned to Earth.
Neyadi had expressed his excitement on April 6 when he was
chosen to conduct the spacewalk, tweeting that it was a great honor and
responsibility to be chosen as the first Arab astronaut to undertake a
spacewalk.
Although not the first Emirati astronaut to go to space —
that honor goes to Hazza Al-Mansoori, who spent eight days on the ISS in 2019 —
Neyadi is the first Arab and Emirati astronaut on a long-term mission to the
ISS.
He is expected to remain on board until September 2023.
