GAZA – The military correspondent for the Israeli news site
"Walla" described the Shuja'iyya neighborhood, located east of Gaza
City, as "one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in the Middle
East." This description came after witnessing what the Israeli army faced
in the neighborhood, including missiles, wells, tunnels, and mines set up by
the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of the
Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas).

As reported by Al-Ghad Newspaper, the correspondent, Amir
Bokbot, who accompanied Israeli soldiers in Shuja'iyya, conveyed the soldiers'
surprise upon entering the neighborhood. He quoted Deputy Commander of Brigade
188, Major Oudeid, addressing the soldiers, saying that
Palestinian militants “did not refrain from building wells and tunnels everywhere. We have already
found some of them in the area, and in our estimation, there are many of them
here."
Extreme Alert Status
Bokbot reported the military situation, stating, "The
Merkava tank slows down and stops next to what was previously a 3-story
building. For its current condition, the term 'building' is a kind of praise;
it is almost touching the ground in Shuja'iyya."
Bokbot portrayed the situation of Major Oudeid raising his
voice in front of the soldiers, stating, "There is an enemy here,
anti-tank missiles here, mortar shells here, and suicide bombers." The
correspondent highlighted that the soldiers could barely hear the major's words
amidst the echoes of continuous explosions, the noise of tank machine guns, and
the constant operation of artillery batteries.
Bokbot pointed out that the combat team of Brigade 188
present in
Shuja'iyya since last Monday includes an engineering battalion, a
paratrooper battalion, an infantry battalion, and an armored battalion.
The Strongest
Brigades
The correspondent quoted a veteran security man familiar
with the neighborhood as saying, "Remember well what I tell you: there is
a very strong brigade hiding in Shuja'iyya, one of the strongest brigades in
the military arm of Hamas." Bokbot considered this description as a
"challenge to the Israeli army," comparing it to what the Israeli
army faced in the "Protective Edge'' battle in the summer of 2014 when the
Golani Brigade carried out a ground maneuver in Shuja'iyya.
He added, "It seems as if the brigade entered with its
head against the wall and paid a high price for it." Bokbot continued,
"Historically, Shuja'iyya is known as a place abundant in evil and
cruelty, and it is where they kidnapped the soldier Shaul Aaron." He
further mentioned that any movement in the sky or a slight noise translates
into suspicious looks, with rifle muzzles moving, fearing the presence of an
attacking
UAV belonging to Hamas.
It's worth noting that the Qassam Brigades announced on
Thursday that they had sniped two Israeli soldiers in Shuja'iya, in addition to
destroying 79 Israeli military vehicles within 72 hours.
