According
to Israeli television station, Channel 12, the Israeli Chief of the General
Staff, Herzi Halevi, and senior IOF officers issued clear and direct warnings
to the war cabinet, stressing that “the West Bank is on the brink of an
explosion”, and that “the matter may end up with the outbreak of a third
intifada.”
They
also warned of what it described as “a slippery slope that could lead to an
imminent escalation in the cities of the
West Bank, which could constitute a
new front that Israel will have to deal with.”
The
channel reported, citing officials, the intensive military operations carried
out by the IOF in the West Bank, increasing the amount of raids, arrests, and
assassinations since
October 7, 2023. They attribute it to “the escalation caused by economic difficulties and
the prevention of Palestinian workers from working in Israel.”
The
report published by the channel explained that senior officials in Israeli
security agencies, including officials from
Shin Bet, share in these concerns
as well.
“This
boiling situation may end up with the outbreak of widespread violence,” they
stated.
Officials
in the IOF urged
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to hold dedicated
discussions on this issue and make decisions to prevent the situation in the
West Bank from escalating. However, Netanyahu refrains from taking practical
steps in this context due to pressures exerted on him by his partners in the
coalition.
The
channel also pointed out that the Biden administration shares these concerns and is
pressing Tel Aviv to reduce tensions in the West Bank.
