Organizers estimated that 100,000
demonstrators participated, as hundreds of startups, law firms, and other
private sector companies allowed their employees to join the strike. Train stations and roadways were crammed
with demonstrators trying to reach West Jerusalem.
In spite of the protest and a warning fromIsraeli President Isaac Herzog on Sunday night not to start the legislative
process, the government commenced with the reform plan as scheduled, presenting
the bill to parliament on Monday.
The most significant of the changes
outlined in the plan would allow a simple majority of parliament to overturn Israeli supreme court rulings.
The bill passed the committee vote and will
face a first reading in the full parliament, likely on Wednesday, according to
news sources.
Monday’s protest followed weeks of mass
demonstrations against Netanyahu’s extreme-right government’s proposed reforms.
