AMMAN — The United Nations noted a rise in settler attacks against Palestinians and their property in the occupied West Bank, with around 600 incidents recorded since the beginning of 2023. The UN agency for humanitarian affairs reported 591 incidents related to settlers in the first six months of the year, causing injuries or damage to property.اضافة اعلان

The average is about 99 incidents per month, a 39 percent increase compared to the monthly average in 2022. This follows a record number of incidents in 2022 since they began tracking in 2006, Khaberni reported.

Forced displacement
The report revealed the forced displacement of at least 399 Palestinians from Bedouin communities in the West Bank due to violent actions by settlers. Some settlements were entirely evacuated, while others scattered.

The humanitarian affairs office urgently assessed the needs of 60 affected Palestinian Bedouin communities. The Israeli settlements are deemed illegitimate under international law, exacerbating humanitarian needs, livelihoods, food security, and access to basic services.

490,000 settlers reside in the West Bank
According to the report, 490,000 settlers reside in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, while nearly three million Palestinians live there.

The settlers' attacks have led to the deaths of eight Palestinians in the first half of 2023. The Israeli authorities have studied 75 structural plans to expand or establish new settlements, including the construction of 13,000 settlement units.

Collective attacks by settler militias on peaceful Palestinian villages have raised concerns about the future of the conflict. This worrying situation stems from the rise of settler leaders to power within the Israeli state and the breeding of religious extremism. The Israeli army often shields these extremist settlers, criminalizing Palestinians who defend themselves and their land.
