AMMAN — The US is “extremely troubled” by a
vote by the Knesset to repeal parts of Israel’s 2005 Disengagement Law and
legitimize certain settlements in the West Bank, a spokesperson said on
Tuesday, calling the move “provocative” and a violation of promises to Tel
Aviv’s ally Washington.
On Tuesday, Israeli lawmakers repealed an act that banned settlers from living in areas of the West Bank evacuated in 2005 with
the dismantling of four Jewish settlements, according to news outlets.
“The United States is extremely troubled that the
Israeli Knesset has passed legislation rescinding important parts of the 2005 Disengagement Law,” State Department spokesman Vedant Patel told reporters.
“The US strongly urges Israel to refrain from allowing the return of settlers to the area covered by the legislation, consistent with former prime minister Sharon and the current Israeli government's commitment to the United States.”
Patel said the vote represents a “clear
contradiction” of promises made by former Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon
to the US, as well as assurances made just two days prior in Sharm El-Sheikh by
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government.
“The US strongly urges Israel to refrain from
allowing the return of settlers to the area covered by the legislation,
consistent with former prime minister Sharon and the current Israeli
government's commitment to the United States,” he said.
