WASHINGTON — The US announced that
it would impose new sanctions on Syria, targeting 11 individuals and entities
supporting President Bashar al-Assad's government by facilitating illicit
financial transfers and drug trafficking, including Captagon.

Syria
has become a major producer and exporter of Captagon, a highly addictive
stimulant trafficked throughout the Middle East, Al-Mamlaka TV reported.
The US Department of State affirmed that the
Assad regime derives significant revenue from illicit Captagon trade, exporting
raw materials extracted and processed from Syria with the assistance of foreign
entities.
Additionally, the US announced sanctions
targeting entities aiding the Assad government in ‘reaping millions from the
mining sector.’
