In a statement from the Chilean
government, it was announced that “the 2024 International Aviation and Space
Fair (FIDAE), which is scheduled to take place from [April 9-14], will not
involve Israeli companies.”
Officials did not provide an
explanation for the decision. Additionally, the leftist party of President
Gabriel Boric criticized what they deem to be a “disproportionate” response
from the Israeli government to the October 7 in the Israeli-occupied Palestinian
territory.
The Israeli occupation promised to
“eliminate” Hamas after Operation Al-Aqsa Flood and began a devastating war on
Gaza. According to the latest tally from the Gaza Ministry of Health, Israel
has killed at least 30,000 Palestinians, most of whom are civilians.
Chile accommodates the largest
population of Palestinians outside of the Middle East. In late October, Chile expelled
its Israeli ambassador to protest against “unacceptable Israeli violations of
international humanitarian law” in Gaza.
In January, Mexico and Chile joined
calls for the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate Israel’s
possible war crimes.
However, the Israeli Ambassador, Giz
Artzyeli, told AFP News that he was neither contacted nor informed by the
government about the decision to exclude Israel from FIDAE. He added that
Israeli officials are not surprised by the views held by the Chilean government
toward Israel.
