On Tuesday, the Left-Wing Spanish
Political Party, Podemos, issued an official statement to the EBU, asserting,
"The European Broadcasting Union expressed its desire for Eurovision to
remain a non-political event where artists and presenters compete, not
governments."
The statement indicated that Eurovision
has exercised its right of veto against Russia's participation in the contest
since 2022, in response to the commencement of Russia's military operation in
Ukraine.
Members of the EU concluded, stating,
"We urge the Broadcasting Union to act fairly and apply the same standards
when making decisions. Therefore, we request a reconsideration of the decision
to allow Israel to participate in the Eurovision festival."
In January, over 1,400 representatives of
the
Finnish music industry signed a petition to Finland’s Public Broadcasting
Corporation (YLE) , urging for influence on EBU and advocating for the
prevention of Israel's participation in the music competition.
Furthermore, In December 2023, the
Icelandic magazine ‘Iceland Review’ reported that the Icelandic Association of
Authors and Composers (ISAC) requested the
Icelandic National Broadcasting Corporation (RUV) not to participate in
Eurovision 2024 if Israel was among the
participants.
Notably, the Eurovision 2024 contest is
scheduled to take place in the city of Malmö, Sweden, in May.
