AMMAN — EU member states and
European lawmakers reached an
agreement on Tuesday to overhaul the existing
Schengen visa system, making it
largely digital and eliminating the need for physical stickers on passports.

Under the new law, once it receives official approval and is
implemented, travelers requiring a visa to enter EU countries will be able to
apply online instead of visiting consulates or visa service offices in person,
AFP reported.
Matias Nemic, a prominent European MP and staunch supporter
of the
digital visa system, emphasized that the adoption of this new approach
will make the visa application process easier, cheaper, and faster.
The Schengen area encompasses all 27 EU member states, with
the exception of Cyprus, Ireland, Bulgaria, and Romania.
While the EU already
grants visa-free entry to citizens of
more than 60 countries outside the bloc, individuals requiring a visa have
traditionally been required to affix a "Schengen" sticker on their
passports.
However, with the introduction of
EU databases for
monitoring traveler entries and exits, validating stay durations, and enhancing
border security checks, the European visa system has been steadily progressing
towards digitalization.
