AMMAN — The volume of cargo
handled in 2021 in the
Port of Aqaba, both incoming and outgoing, reached 19.5
million tonnes, according to Al-Mamlaka TV.

Secretary-General of
Jordan Shipping Association Mohammad Al-Dalabeeh said on Sunday that the volume of goods handled
in 2021 call for optimism despite the high global freight rates, the lack of
sufficient ships, and the repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic, globally.
Dalabeeh said there was a 7 percent increase
in the handling of dry bulk goods such as phosphates, potash, grains,
fertilizers, sulfur, and coal, which reached 12 million tonnes in 2021, while
in 2020 11.2 million tonnes were handled, while the volume of liquid bulk cargo
handling decreased by 12 percent to 5.5 million tonnes, compared to 6.3 million
tonnes in 2020.
Aqaba port recorded an 18 percent increase
in the handling of general cargo, from 1.5 million tonnes to 1.8 million tonnes
in 2021, while the handling of cars decreased by 6 percent, reaching 109,000.
The number of passengers on the
Aqaba-Nuweiba road increased by 244 percent, recording 230,000 people in 2021,
after the
Arab Bridge Maritime Company was allowed to transport passengers
between Aqaba and Nuweiba, according to Dalabeeh, who also confirmed the
increase in the number of cruise ships docking in Aqaba, from 11,000 to 24,000,
an increase of 118 percent.
Livestock handling through the port
of Aqaba increased by 18 percent, to reach 1.4, while container handling
decreased by 10.7 percent, recording 765,662 containers, according to Dalabeeh.
