AMMAN —
Jordanian date exports, especially the Majhool variety, increased by more than
50 percent, following a spike in global demand, according to Jordan News
Agency, Petra.

Anwar Haddad, head
of the
Jordan Dates Association (JDA), highlighted the farmers’ and the
Ministry of Agriculture’s interest in the sector, noting that the latter
supported the JDA activities promoting Jordanian dates, including its
participation in international and local exhibitions and promotional campaigns
on social media platforms.
He underlined that
Jordanian producers utilize the best technologies in the production and
marketing of dates.
Assistant
Secretary-General of the Ministry of Agriculture for Marketing Hazem Smadi said
that 9,000 tons of dates were exported in the past year, compared to about
6,000 tons in previous years.
Smadi added that the local per capita consumption increased
from 1.5 kilos of dates during the year to 3.3 kilos, adding that the number of
palm trees reached 650,000 on an area of 45,000 dunums, and produce a total of
30,000 tons of different varieties.
