There were significant psychological and security-related
outcomes, and changes in the balance of powers that resulted from the recent
confrontation between Israel and Palestinians.

The situation is serious and significant politically and it
may affect the fate of Netanyahu as a leader. In Jordan, there have been many
years of mistrust between
Jordan and Netanyahu, whose relationship with a
country as important as Jordan has plummeted. He seems to not be listening to
what Israeli institutions are telling him, as if he is taking Jordan for
granted.
This pushed
Jordan to move forward in the direction of
reminding all actors of its vital role, its weight, and its ability to change
and influence.
There have been two important events that should not pass
without enough analysis. The first was when authorities did not bar rallies
that took place near the borders and the second was allowing a mass gathering
where people voiced support for resistance groups.
There is more that can be done, but these two events
highlight very important attributes of Jordan, related to what it is capable of
doing and the country’s strategic importance. Jordan has shown that it cannot
be taken for granted.
Jordan deeply believes in peace and equality and is
committed to treaties it has entered into and the understandings it has
reached. Nevertheless, it cannot keep doing that if it feels it is marginalized
or that its interests are not taken seriously.
Jordan is not competing with anyone and is not offering to
replace any party, but its interests should be protected. No one should even
think that they can take Jordan for granted. It indeed has more cards to play.
However, it is hopeful that the message regarding taking its interests
seriously will get across, particularly to Netanyahu.
The US administration’s position on what has happened was
also full of political signs that completely contradict Netanyahu’s convictions
and declared positions. The position has been described as balanced,
respectful, ethical, and humanely biased towards the suffering of civilians in
Palestine. The US has stressed that the conflict is not sustainable and should
be solved based on the two-state formula.
The Biden administration is a friend of Israel and there is
no debate about that. However, its position on the recent attacks, the pressure
it has put on Netanyahu, the latter’s submission to that, and its declared
policies have proven to be a nightmare for Netanyahu. They all point to an
administration that knows what it is doing, even though the Middle East is not
on the radar of its foreign policy. The US administration is aware of its clout
in the Middle East and the opportunity of winning the Noble Peace Prize.
No one expects a US-Israel clash like those in the days of
Carter, Clinton, and Obama. The times are different, yet American influence
will be impactful on Israel, and will affect the attitudes of Israel’s elite,
which means that Netanyahu will be weakened politically and electorally and his
days in politics are numbered.
Netanyahu was democratically elected, and the Biden
administration will not be able to remove him unless the voters decide to do
so. America’s political influence with opinion leaders and politicians in
Israel will encourage them to understand the message that there is a need for change.
The best thing that the American administration can do at the time is doing its
best to ensure a democratic change in Israel. Regardless of who will replace
Netanyahu, a new leader will not be as hateful and evil as the old one.
